Post-Cosmetic Surgery MLD: What Your Surgeon May Not Tell You

If you’ve just had cosmetic surgery - or you’re planning for one - you probabay left the clinic with a list of aftercare instructions, a prescription, and maybe a few post-op supplies. But what many surgeons don’t tell you is this:

Your body needs help moving lymph - and that’s where Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) comes in.

So, What Is MLD?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a gentle, skin to skin technique that gently encourages and helps move lymphatic fluid through your system. After surgery, your lymph vessels can become overwhelmed or tired due to swelling, trauma, or inflammation.

MLD uses light, rhythmic movements to encourage fluid drainage - without deep pressure, bruising, or pain. It’s specifically designed for healing.

Why Surgeons May Not Mention It

Many skilled surgeons focus on the technical success of the procedure itself - as they should. But post-op healing goes beyond stitches and compression garments. Some simply don’t specialize in the lymphatic health, or assume swelling will resolve on its own. Which the swelling absolutely will resolve on it’s own but it may take longer and leave you in more pain than if you start a series of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage sessions soon after your surgery. Others may rely on general massage therapists who aren’t trained in MLD, or aren’t aware that the timing and technique matter just as much as the surgery itself.

Here’s What They May Not Tell You (But I Will)

  • Swelling isn’t just cosmetic - it can affect scar formation, comfort, and healing speed.

  • Bruising and fluid retention are common after liposuction, facelifts, tummy tucks, and BBLs.

  • Deep tissue massage is not safe immediately post-op — it can damage healing tissue.

  • MLD is designed for post-surgical needs: gentle, non-invasive, and effective.
